Product detail
Technical and purchasing information
High carbon cast steel shot is a reusable metallic abrasive for shot blasting, blast cleaning, desanding, scale removal, and surface preparation of ferrous workpieces. The particles are nearly spherical, so they transfer energy through repeated impact rather than cutting. That makes shot a good fit for jobs where steady cleaning and broad coverage matter more than creating an aggressive profile.
YUXIN supplies high carbon cast steel shot in SAE sizes from S70 to S1110. Size affects both impact and coverage: larger shot hits harder per particle, while smaller shot covers more area. The right choice depends on workpiece size, starting surface condition, blasting equipment, and the finish you need.

Microstructure
Homogeneous tempered martensitic structure with diffusely distributed carbides; exact metallographic condition is subject to grade and inspection result
In wheel blasting or air blasting, steel shot is thrown at the workpiece at high speed. The round particles strike the surface repeatedly, removing loosely or moderately bonded contaminants like foundry sand, oxide scale, and rust. Since the particles are nearly spherical rather than angular, they work mainly by impact and coverage, not by the stronger cutting action you get from steel grit.
That makes cast steel shot especially useful when stable batch cleaning matters more than cutting a rough profile. Size, hardness, blast speed, exposure time, machine condition, and the operating mix all affect the result.
Application Scope by Shot Size
SS-2.5 to SS-1.7 — Heavy Cleaning
Coarser shot sizes are meant for heavy-duty cleaning of large cast steel parts, large castings, structural steel workpieces, and heavy forgings. Typical jobs include removing surface rust, oxide scale, and tightly stuck process residue.
SS-1.4 to SS-1.0 — Medium and Large Workpieces
These grades suit rust removal, scale removal, pre-coating surface treatment, and general blast cleaning of medium and large castings, forgings, heat-treated workpieces, steel plate, steel tube, and structural steel.
SS-0.8 to SS-0.6 — Small and Medium Components
These sizes give a finer balance between impact and coverage. They work well on smaller castings, forgings, heat-treated parts, plate and pipe components, and other jobs where denser surface coverage is needed.
SS-0.5 to SS-0.3 — Finer Surface Treatment
Finer grades can be used on smaller alloy castings, thin plate, strip steel, and other relatively small workpieces where a finer blasting action is preferred. For stainless steel or aluminum-alloy parts, check ferrous contamination requirements and process compatibility before choosing carbon steel shot.

Standards and Specification Framework
The product information and previously confirmed documentation reference the following standards for high carbon cast steel shot and related size control:
GB/T 18838.3-2008 — High Carbon Cast Steel Shot and Grit
ISO 11124-3 — High-carbon cast-steel shot and grit
JIS G 5903 — Cast steel shot and grit
SFSA 20-66 — Cast steel abrasive
SAE J827 — Cast Steel Shot
SAE J444 — Cast shot and grit size specifications
Product conformity for a specific order is determined by the agreed specification, applicable standard edition, inspection records, and order documents.
Why Particle Size Matters
Shot size affects both impact energy and coverage. Coarser grades generally suit larger, heavier workpieces or more tightly bonded scale. Finer grades put more impacts on each unit of area, so they work better on smaller parts, thinner sections, and jobs that need a finer finish.
The final result also depends on shot hardness, particle shape, blast speed, equipment condition, exposure time, and the operating mix inside the machine. The same nominal shot size can therefore behave differently under different production conditions.
